Meet the Coaches

FOUNDER & HEAD COACH
Kelly Starrett

Coach Kelly Starrett founded San Francisco CrosSFit with his wife and fellow athlete Juliet. Since opening its doors in 2005 as one of the first 50 CrossFit Affiliates, this athletic training center has become the prime coaching resource for reigning Olympians, national and world champions, tri-athletes, runners, and recreational athletes alike. Kelly's focused coaching and warm personality brings his professional training as a strength coach and a doctor of physical therapy to life for brilliant coaching in a positive environment. Kelly is an inspiration to nearly everyone he meets, causing even superior athletes to re-examine their physical capacities and reach higher levels, and motivating beginners to believe in their natural ability to excel.

Kelly received his Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2007 from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, California. Before starting his own physical therapy practice at San Francisco CrosSFit, he practiced performance-based physical therapy at the world-renowned Stone Clinic. In current practice, Kelly continues to focus on performance-based Orthopedic Sports Medicine with an emphasis on returning athletes to elite level sport and performance. His clients see exceptional results from his progressive blend of manual physical therapy and strength training. Kelly's clients have included Olympic gold-medalists, world-class extreme skiers and X-Games medalists, dancers with Smuin, San Francisco, and Sacramento Ballet Companies, military personnel, and competitive age-division athletes.

Kelly has also served as the strength and conditioning coach for the Marin Rowing Association high school rowing program where he helped lead the varsity girls to a national title in 2008. He is also proud to have served as strength coach to reigning rowing Olympic gold medalist Erin Cafaro, in preparation for her success in the 2008 Beijing Olympiad.

Kelly's background as an athlete and coach includes paddling whitewater slalom canoe on the US Canoe and Kayak Teams, and leading the Men's Whitewater Rafting Team to two national titles and competition in two World Championships. In his free time Kelly enjoys spending time with his two daughters, Georgia and Caroline, surfing, paddling, Olympic lifting, and dancing.

Adrian Bozman

Adrian Bozman has been teaching CrossFit since 2005 and joined the ranks of SFCF in early 2006. He is a member of the CrossFit HQ staff and as such is lucky enough to travel around the United States teaching what he loves.
Carl Paoli

Born in the U.S. to Swedish parents and growing up in Spain, Carl Paoli learned from an early age how to be other people conscious. As a child, Carl's passion for physical activity and desire for sport led him to delve into the worlds of any different sports such as snowboarding, skiing, wakeboarding, water skiing, karate, and the like. It was his love for gymnastics, however, that would most greatly shape his definition of hard work and determination.

Carl was an elite gymnast in Spain where he trained and competed for over fifteen years. Throughout his gymnastics career he received many accolades including a National Gold Medal for Vault. Carl studied Environmental Science at Universidad Miguel Hernandez and specialized in Genetic Engineering and Coral Reef Ecology. After university, Carl returned to the U.S. to pursue his career in marine biology.

Never far from his mind was his appreciation for sport and fitness. He reentered the world of gymnastics in 2004 in San Francisco, where he now lives and works as a Strength and Conditioning Coach and runs his own practice called Naka Athletics (www.nakaathletics.com), which specializes in all level physical preparation and representation of action sports athletes.

School is never out for Carl as he has many certifications surrounding health and fitness and is in continuous collaboration with several international athletic programs. He takes his athletes and clients seriously, but not himself. It is his consistency in his business, personal and family life that allows him to continue the pursuit for success.

Corrine Brenner

Corrine's path toward fitness may sound familiar. She participated in sports (track and cross country) during school. Afterwards, Corrine would typically run 3-6 miles/day or glide away on the elliptical machine, with the occasional weightlifting day. Years went by and she still felt that, after all those hours of hard work, her fitness level wasn't reflecting her efforts. She wasn't seeing any results. Working out was a daily chore.

Then in October 2007, Corrine was introduced to CrossFit and the results began to flood in. With CrossFit's approach of making each workout uniquely varied and randomized, working out had become fun again. But what Corrine found most surprising about discovering CrossFit was that the physical results, as amazing as they were, were only part of the package. Fellow athletes and coaches forged bonds through their daily efforts, struggles, failures and triumphs. Corrine realized she was participating in something more meaningful and more important than a fitness regime. With this realization, Corrine decided to put her law career on the sidelines (she passed the February 2008 California Bar Exam!) and focus on pursuing her career as a CrossFit Trainer.

As a CrossFit Level I Certified Personal Trainer, Corrine is dedicated to giving others the opportunity to find what she discovered at San Francisco CrosSFit: a sense of well-being that can only come from finding true life-sustaining fitness and community. Corrine is available for personalized training as well as small group training including a Women's-Only Group class.
Roop Sihota

Growing up with an Evel Knievel type of personality, Roop successfully explored various sports and activities beginning as early as his childhood with little league baseball, advancing to football and basketball through school years and moving on to hiking and snowboarding as his current passion. Fueled by his desire and his determination to be the best at every sport, along with the stigma of being labeled the "skinny kid," Roop discovered the best way to enhance his abilities and skills was to get into the weight room. Combining his unfaltering positive attitude, an infinite amount of energy and an infectious personality, Roop began to inspire others to fulfill a mutual desire to be fit, athletic and live the healthiest lifestyle possible. Roop's genuine care about individual needs is apparent in his specifically tailored training programs as he goes beyond the confinements of the gym/weight room and reaches out to better each person in all aspects of life, from the physical, to the nutritional, mental and emotional.

Roop's goal is to inspire and encourage everyone to live life to the fullest and therefore shares his viewpoint that one should train hard, eat right, learn to indulge properly, and don't forget to laugh!

After spending years trying to find the right fitness program, Roop found CrossFit and only after a few days of participating knew he found the philosophy that he feels he can apply to himself and those he works with, as the program is well rounded and tuned to the specific needs of each individual. Roop has a Level 1 CrossFit certification, and additionally holds specialty certifications in Barbell Training and Olympic Lifting.

Roop's experience includes working with children who are looking to just have fun, helping children with juvenile diabetes, reaching out to adults with chronic pains and adults with Type II Diabetes. He has a lifelong desire to make a significant positive impact in both the pediatric and elderly population. Roop believes everyone has a right to a happy and healthy life and has seen his clients make dramatic shifts in their lives for the better.
Brendon Mahoney

Brendon started his athletic career playing nearly every sport under the sun. His first love was baseball. However, due to his inability to stand still for more than five seconds at a time, running competitively became a better option. Eventually Brendon went on to win a High School National Scholastic Championship in the mile, garner All American honors in the mile and 800m events for Georgia Tech and compete in 2004 Olympic Trials. After college he competed professionally with the Nike Farm Team in Palo Alto where he became increasingly frustrated with the rise in injuries he was sustaining. (He also red-shirted twice in college due to IT band syndrome.) Within four years, Brendon's athletic career and hopes for making an Olympic team came to a complete standstill. Years of abusing his body with high mileage routines and specialized generic running programs had taken their toll. Brendon was a sad young man... and then he found CrossFit in 2007. Before, he could have been considered a mindless robot. A robot that ran through the woods or around in quarter-mile circles continuously getting injured and not understanding the cause.

Today, CrossFit forms the foundation of his training. He has recreated himself not just as an endurance athlete, but also as strong, healthy and fully functional human being. He is a more complete athlete, one who not only is able to perform at elite levels on the track and trail, but also has time to spend with his family, raise his daughter, run a business and contribute to the greater good of society.

In his mind, anything is possible for the athlete in CrossFit. He believes that elite fitness is attainable for anybody and trains the individual first using the CrossFit methodology. Brendon then coaches the endurance athlete on the skill of running. Once the proper skill has been established, he then programs the individual training based upon their running and fitness goals. While Brendon is primarily a middle distance athlete; he has recently won his first off-road half marathon and continues to train for the USA Mountain Running circuit. He is currently also a sponsored athlete for Inov-8 shoes. He holds a Level 1 certification in CrossFit methodology and a Level 2 certification in CrossFit Endurance.
Kimarie Haverty-Bozman

Over the past 15 years, Kimmy Bozman has pursued experiential knowledge in many realms of physical culture, including barbell work, circus arts, kettlebells, and the relationship between diet and performance. While her current favorite activity to coach is Olympic-style weightlifting, Kim finds inspiration in the hard work and gains of anyone with whom she works. She loves the excitement of introducing beginners to basic movements and good training habits and the challenge of optimizing the performance of established athletes.

Kimmy loves to teach and by the same token, learns something new every day about being a better coach and athlete.

The personal points of focus in her training right now are a deeply cultivated base of strength, a biomechanically healthy body, the continual pursuit of nirvana in the snatch and the clean and jerk, and recovery of all of her circus tricks.

The coaches at San Francisco CrosSFit are not typical gym-style personal trainers. The SFCF coaches are committed to helping each client achieve and exceed their fitness goals in a fun and supportive environment. Not only are the SFCF coaches good athletes in their own right, but they are all highly experienced coaches who work closely with clients to help them achieve their goals.
